At the 2025 Congress of the International Mastic Asphalt Association (IMAA) on October 9th and 10th at the Hilton Hotel Rotterdam, the international mastic asphalt industry gathered to discuss the latest developments and innovations.
Around 120 specialists from numerous European countries, including engineers, researchers and entrepreneurs, impressively demonstrated that mastic asphalt is far more than a proven construction material: it is the key to sustainable, durable and innovative infrastructure solutions. Under the motto "Mastic asphalt is up-to-date and constantly gaining momentum," the event offered a successful blend of site visits, technical presentations and intensive exchanges. The focus was on quality assurance strategies that emphasize the sustainability of the material. Particularly noteworthy is a new method for measuring static penetration depth, which enables faster results and is of great importance in multi-layer mastic asphalt installation. Practice-oriented contributions presented solutions for bridge waterproofing, expansion joints, parking deck surfaces and sealing systems.
Another key focus was on the further development of low-noise surface layers: through targeted variations in chipping grain size and surface treatment, significant noise reductions can be achieved, especially when the amount of chippings is reduced so that there is no excess on the surface, but rather the chippings are optimally applied "grain-to-grain." A special highlight was the opportunity to witness the renovation of a parking deck using manual application live and to cultivate national and international contacts.
The congress made it clear: mastic asphalt is not a material of yesterday, but a construction material of tomorrow with great future potential, where research, practice and sustainability optimally interconnect.
The next IMAA Congress will take place on October 8th and 9th, 2026 in Vienna. We look forward to it!
