Mastic asphalt on the largest bridge structure in the world: the Hong Kong – Zhuhai – Macao bridge is opened

On 18 and 19 October 2018, the IMAA hosted its annual congress in Chongqing/CHN. The IMAA has had members from China since 2014; in 2018 the hour has struck for China to become host country of the International Mastic Asphalt Congress for the first time. A 50-member delegation from Europe visited the bridge construction works in Chongqing on the first day of the congress.

Know-how transfer around the world
Seven speakers from China and six Europeans then reported on their experiences and latest findings regarding mastic asphalt at the technical congress. The Europeans focused their attention on applications of mastic asphalt that go beyond bridge construction (e.g. parking decks or deck coverings on motorways), because such applications are still little known in China. The Chinese speakers focused on the use of mastic asphalt on the thousands of bridges in China and especially on the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao bridge. With over 500 participants, the IMAA Congress was better attended than ever before – much to the delight of the co-organisers from Switzerland and China.

Marketing boost for mastic asphalt also for Europe
The mastic asphalt construction method is considered to be established worldwide. Life-cycle cost considerations have convinced clients on all continents that mastic asphalt is the most economical construction method for bridge construction in the long term. The major project of the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge, where mastic asphalt was used in two layers on a PMMA waterproofing, can also be used in Europe as a further argument for this construction method.

Visit to the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge
Under the leadership of Heinz Aeschlimann, Zofingen, 35 Europeans visited the Hong Kong - Zhuhai - Macao Bridge HZMB after the congress and exchanged views with representatives of the state bridge construction authorities of Zhuhai and Hong Kong for two days. Since Chinese President Xi Jinping opened the bridge unexpectedly for October 24 and the military closed the bridge to visitors three days earlier, organizational talent was required because the delegation had to change its program on site at short notice. Nevertheless, the delegation was able to get a live impression of the gigantic bridge structure that binds Hong Kong and Macao closer to China.

Next year in Cologne/Germany
On 26 and 27 September 2019, Europe, namely the city of Cologne in Germany, will once again unite mastic asphalt specialists from all over the world. Further information on the IMAA Congress 2019 can be found from May of next year on this website. The annually changing Vice Presidium is always held by the country representative whose country is hosting the next Congress. Hendrik Marossow, president of the German Advisory Board for Mastic Asphalt Application, was traditionally elected vice president of the IMAA for 2019 at the annual IMAA meeting, which also took place in Chongqing.
